To understand the results reached by Gaudi
one must situate himself in the era of the agony of Romantisism and of
Neoclassical models and also in the geographical space in which he lived,
loved and comprehended totally, in that moment of renovation; the cities
of Reus and Barcelona. At this moment of Modernistic outbreak, the movement
of regeneration and replanting of the arts in which one can produce the
person and his work. |
During all his career he alternated
study and professional collaboration with diverse architects in Barcelona.
Once he had obtained the degree, the collaborations continued and the architect
worked on the decorative taskt of the "Ciudadela" Park of Barcelona,
the Vicens house, the co-operative "La Obrera Mataronense" and
the furniture of the "Comillas" chapel, apart from other diverse
projects not always realized. These were the first tests which allowed
him to find solutions - synthesis of Romanic-Ghotic Medievalism, organic
naturalism, orientalism, geometrism - which configure in all his posterior
work. The diversity of the asignments is evident and would also be maintained
in all produced by this architect - urban work, decorative, private, social
and religious.
With all one must point out that Gaudi
never limited himself to some criterian of school, that which makes of
his figure and his work a chapter apart in Modernism - also known as Art
Nouveau. Refering to his figure it has been said that humanity only produces
an original, new architecture capable of changing everything, every seven
or eight centuries. It is truly this when one has to confront the work
of Gaudi, understanding that after the imaginative overflowing and the
creativity which characterize him hides a complete and coherante harmonious,
monolithic conception of society and man, of politics and religion and
definitely, architecture with which he served his convictions. |
