NEW PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
Please distribute to colleagues and students you think are applicable.
The Environmental Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for
citizens from Albania, Croatia, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
The Environmental Law Program (ELP) is an educational initiative of
the Open Society Institute. The ELP's goal is to educate a new
generation of environmental leaders who have the vision and expertise
to grapple with environmental legal issues confronting their region.
It aims to foster ties between students from the region and colleagues
from other parts of the world; cultivate and strengthen long lasting
links between US organizations and environmental NGO's working in the
region; encourage cross-national dialogue among environmental leaders
in the region; and provide comprehensive student services including
pre-departure orientation, workshops and alumni/ae activities.
Awards will be made for study in one-year, graduate degree programs in
Environmental Law in the United States. The strongest candidates have
completed their legal degrees and are currently working in the
environmental field. We will also consider applicants who apply
during their last year of their legal studies provided they can
demonstrate a strong commitment and interest in working for
environmental reform and policy development. In either case,
applicants must be certified lawyers by the summer of 1997. During
their year of study, students will participate in a pre-departure
orientation program and Winter Conference and contribute to a
newsletter published by the Consortium for Academic Partnership.
After their academic program is completed, students will be expected
to locate and secure a three month internship in an environmental
organization. Immediately following completion of their internship,
students will be sent home to implement what they have learned in the
US. Requests for renewals and extensions will not be considered under
any circumstances.
Applicants must fit the following criteria:
1. A diploma in law.
2. An above average academic record.
3. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to working to solve
environmental issues which confront their nation at the local or
national level.
4. Citizen of Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Poland or Albania.
5. Fluent in reading, writing and speaking English (TOEFL scores of
580 or above will be required).
6. Extracurricular activity in environmentally related fields.
7. Have spent previous two years in home country.
8. Able to begin studies in summer 1997 and stay in the US through
the summer of 1998.
