INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

ISEA stands for 'International Students for Environmental Action', a
network of students and student groups doing actions and lobbying for
sustainable development at universities. Main aim of ISEA is making sure
that higher education really becomes sustainable, respecting nature and
human rights.

ISEA-L list

Some weeks ago the ISEA e-maillist started. With the ISEA-emaillist
(ISEA-L@nic.surfnet.nl) students are able to exchange experiences of
environmental actions at universities between different countries. Other
persons than students are of course also welcome to take part. This list
is also used by the coordination group of ISEA to coordinate next
meetings.

aims of ISEA

* set up an european and later on international network of
national environmental student action groups.
* exchange of information about students actions for a sustai-
nable university.
* exchange of knowledge between students on environmental
issues, especially between Eastern and Western Europe.
* coordinating, if necessary, european environmental students
actions.
* get hold on European dicision-making concerning sustainable
development in relation to higher education and research.
* awareness-raising about the cultural developments taking
place in the different countries (East and West, North and
South), because we should learn from each others mistakes
concerning sustainable development.
* cooperate with other environmental and students networks

Copernicus

In October 1995 we decided to concentrate on the implementati-
on of the Copernicus-charter with ISEA. The Commission of
European Rectors (CRE) initiated the Copernicus-charter. This
charter is a list of ten points of action signed by almost 250
(half of the) European universities. In short the universities
promise to become 'sustainable'. Most of them have not really
done so.

background of ISEA

The environmental crisis demands many changes of higher educa-
tion. In many countries students, aware of the environmental
crisis, become active demanding universities and high schools
to take action for the future generations.
Within many institutions local student groups are founded,
succesfull lobbying and doing actions for better environmental
care (i.e. recycling paper), awareness of students and tea-
chers and another education system based on sustainable deve-
lopment. In some countries a national coordination group has
been founded to exchange experiences between the local groups.
To exchange experiences between different countries, ISEA was
founded in 1994 as a working group of A SEED-Europe, an euro-
pean-wide network of environmental action groups.

next meetings

****> Spain, 19th till 24 May 1996 - Santiago de Compostella
CRE has her bi-annual congress and invited ISEA to take part,
because the universities will also talk about the Copernicus-
charter. ISEA will have a ISEA-meeting there. Students are
welcome to that meeting, but we can't give travelreimburse-
ments. A group of students of the Netherlands and Germany will
travel by van.
****> Belgium, October 1996 - Bruxelles
If possible, we arrange a meeting during the ESIB-congress, an
european student congres.

****> Januar 1997
We want to organise a congress for all the ISEA contactper-
sons, with as main theme Copernicus.
